A reader of The Register named Jay spotted a digital bus stop display in Manchester showing more than departure times: a Windows Defender Firewall notification sat right on top of the Bee Network signage, partially covering the destination, which was probably Altrincham.

The likely culprit is Vix Technology's Remote Software Manager trying to pass through Windows Defender Firewall. The Register's assessment points to a botched configuration. There's no sign of a genuine security threat. The display itself is a Vix unit, so the vendor's engineers should be able to fix it.

The Bee Network is rolling out nearly 300 of these screens in 2026. Besides showing upcoming buses, they offer audio announcements of arrival times for visually impaired passengers at the push of a button.

The unit is probably a Vix Technology ITD-2810S or similar, a low-power display that charges overnight and fits a bus shelter's lighting system. Its resolution is high enough that Windows internals show through clearly. The Register places the blame on whoever configured the sign, noting Windows was only doing its job.
