A Register reader named Kenny Millar spotted the billboard in Greenock, a town in Scotland's west central Lowlands. For several weeks the giant display has shown nothing but a Debian login prompt.

The explanation is corporate, not technical. The board belonged to 75Media, a major UK outdoor advertising firm that ceased trading at the end of 2025. A 2024 Street View image still showed the 75Media branding at the sign's base, since removed. Responsibility has presumably passed to another agency, but nobody has logged in since.

The system appears to run Debian 11, codename Bullseye, released in 2021. Its long-term support ends in 2026, though paid fixes can stretch to 2031. The display itself is physically imposing but resolves just 1,200 x 320 pixels, enough for two side-by-side games of Doom, as the original report notes, but cramped for a desktop.

So the terminal sits there in plain view, awaiting a sudo shutdown -h or the next ad slideshow that will never come. Somewhere, IT is aware. Nobody cares.
