A developer going by DosFox1 has published OSHintosh, an open source PCB design that reproduces the function of Apple's original Mac 512k, according to Hackaday. The project files are on GitHub under DosFox1's account.

The board boots straight into a classic Mac OS disk image, but it departs from the original hardware in one big way: there are no floppy disks and no SCSI interface. Instead, the disk image sits in ROM, which should load far faster than a 1980s floppy drive ever could.

DosFox1 managed to fit the design onto a two-layer PCB, keeping manufacturing costs down despite the board's size. Hackaday notes that the legality of dumping an original Mac ROM onto this board is unclear, but assuming an owner has a legitimate copy from a defunct Mac 512k, the board offers a way to keep running vintage Mac software on real hardware rather than an emulator.

Because it has no disk support, OSHintosh cannot fully substitute for an original Mac yet. Commenter Joshua raised the idea that firmware from the Unitron, a Brazilian Mac 512k clone, might run on the board, since the Unitron's hardware was itself based on the 512k. Hackaday compares the project's ambition to the FPGA-based Amiga 600 recreation covered on the site in 2018.
