Researchers at the University of Queensland in Australia have fitted giant burrowing cockroaches with remote-control electronics and miniature drug-delivery devices, turning the insects into what the team calls paraborgs. The idea: swarms of the bugs could crawl through rubble or collapsed structures to reach trapped disaster victims and inject life-saving medication where human rescuers cannot go.

The species chosen is the giant burrowing cockroach, the world's heaviest roach at up to 8 centimeters long. The paper says the size was needed to integrate centimetre-scale apparatuses for real world scenarios. The insects are also docile and considered relatively clean and disease-free.

Electrodes attached to the roaches let operators steer them left and right, control their speed, and immobilize them for injection targeting. Different roaches in the swarm carry different equipment: search units, and one variant armed with a single launchable drug syringe. The harnesses are not fatal, and the insects lived as long as unmodified roaches once the gear was removed.

In tests, the team steered paraborgs to their targets with a 100 percent success rate. The auto-injection mechanism worked 90 percent of the time, and roaches within 15 cm of a target hit it 95 percent of the time. The weak spot was stabilization: only 72 percent of attempts succeeded in keeping a roach still for aiming.

Lead author and PhD candidate Hai Nhan Le acknowledged the phobia factor, noting the bugs could mean the difference between life and death for someone trapped in rubble. Lab director Dr. Thang Vo-Doan said future swarms could mix camera and sensor carriers with medical units, and predicted cyborg insect rescue teams could deploy to real emergencies within 5 to 10 years.
