Hackaday reported on September 21, 2026, that mindbox77 created ZXdesk for the 48K Sinclair ZX Spectrum. The 1980s home computer extracted considerable capability from limited hardware, although it was less powerful than machines from Apple, Commodore, or Acorn. Programmers still pushed the platform well beyond its original expectations.
ZXdesk is written in assembly language and presents a desktop interface resembling GEM. It includes menus, windows, and applications on the classic rubber-keyboard computer.
The 48K Spectrum has no disk drive. ZXdesk therefore keeps its applications inside the interface, which prevents it from working as a general-purpose operating system that launches separate programs from disk. Amstrad later produced a Spectrum with a 3" disk drive, but that hardware is outside this project's target. Hackaday also recalls a 2023 project that brought a 3D FPS engine to the Spectrum.
