The PHP Foundation released PIE 1.5 on October 7, 2026, after about five months of work. PIE is the PHP Installer for Extensions. The update focuses on extension installation, upgrades, and package verification.
pie install php-amqp/php-amqp:^2.2 girgias/csvA single install command can now handle several extensions, which helps when building Docker images. Configure options can accompany the command, and PIE assigns each option to the matching extension’s `./configure` settings.
Unattended installs inside PHP projects now require explicit package mappings through `--select=...`. Examples include `--select=example_pie_extension=asgrim/example-pie-extension` and `--select=redis=phpredis/phpredis`. The earlier `--allow-non-interactive-project-install` behavior could not guarantee which package would provide a missing extension, so package selection is now deliberate.
The new `pie upgrade` command updates all PIE-managed extensions within their original constraints. A package installed as `foo/bar:^1.1` can move from version 1.1.5 to 1.2.0. A later 2.0.0 release remains excluded because it falls outside `^1.1`.
PIE also gains a substantially expanded Attestation library for Sigstore verification. The implementation passes 131 conformance tests and skips five because the library is verification-only. It also logs four expected failures. PIE can use the broader verification during updates. The library is no longer tied exclusively to GitHub attestations or GitHub’s trusted root certificate. Both are included by default. The open-source project is available under the BSD-3-Clause licence at github.com/ThePHPF/attestation.
Other additions include `--no-dev` for skipping development extensions in a PHP project, and `--suppress-download-url-method` for disabling selected download URL methods. The new `pie search ...` command locates packages that provide extensions. `pie check-build-tools` checks whether prerequisite build tools appear to be installed. PIE also adds support for placeholders used by some PECL extensions.
