The PHP Foundation is launching a new Special Interest Group focused on onboarding, responding to frequent community feedback that the newcomer experience needs improvement and that PHP may be losing potential users because of it. The initiative was already part of the Foundation's strategy document for the rest of 2026, based on the idea that a better first experience drives community growth and retention.

The announcement, authored by Executive Director Elizabeth Barron, lists several identified problems. Newcomers struggle to know where to begin, since the large number of available tutorials makes it hard to tell which are current and accurate. The php.net manual is a strong reference but not a learning resource for complete beginners, leaving a gap between introductory material and reference documentation. PHP also has a limited and inconsistent presence in universities and bootcamps, with no one-size-fits-all approach to building educational partnerships — an area that may overlap with the existing PHP Ambassadors SIG. Beyond that, newcomers have very uneven levels of community connection, and mentorship programs have proven hard to sustain in the past, even though research shows mentorship is key to retention, particularly for people from marginalized and underrepresented groups. Finally, making the installation process as straightforward as possible remains a priority and will likely involve the php.net website, another possible overlap with the Ambassadors' Marketing Subgroup.

A kick-off meeting is planned for Monday, August 24 at 13:00 UTC; interested participants can request an invite through a registration form, and those who already filled it in do not need to resubmit.
