Discord began rolling out its age-assurance system on Wednesday after delaying the project for more than six months because of community opposition. The company says more than 90 percent of users will not need to confirm their age. The core approach announced in February remains in place.

Stanislav Vishnevskiy, Discord's cofounder and CTO, said the model examines account metadata, engagement patterns, community context, device information, and social-graph embeddings. Discord says messages and voice calls are excluded from the analysis. Its main signal is Discord Entity-Relationship Embeddings, or DERE. The system represents each user with a 32-dimensional numerical embedding derived from links between users, servers, and games they say they play. DERE was developed without age data for training.

The model produces an adult-probability score from 0 to 1. Accounts with uncertain results or too little activity may have to complete an additional check before using age-restricted content, spaces, or settings. Users can create a locally stored AgeKey passkey, complete a credit-card check through Stripe, or share an existing age range from Apple or Google services. Supported sources include Google Wallet, Google Play, and Apple's App Store. Stripe's privacy practices have previously drawn criticism.

Teen accounts receive stricter defaults. Messages from non-friends go to a request inbox, unfamiliar friend requests are flagged, and only adults can disable that protection. Teen accounts cannot enter age-restricted servers or channels. Sensitive images can be blurred or blocked, and profile information is restricted.

Vishnevskiy acknowledged the controversy around biometric and identity checks. He linked the rollout to government pressure for online age controls and the wider move toward a more gated internet. Discord says users should assess the company by the accuracy of its estimates, the speed of corrections, and the data it publishes. Accounts included in the rollout can view their status and complete verification under User Settings > Account Status. The system will reach more accounts as the week progresses.
